A truly modest introduction to Cingular's new high-speed network, the Samsung SGH-ZX10 is a midrange flip phone juiced up with the carrier's new video-clip service. Average users will enjoy its entertaining verve, but power users may be frustrated by its lack of high-end features.

The ZX10's form is generally pleasing. It's a comfortably sized flip phone in soft-touch black plastic with silver accents. I like the nicely sized, clicky, rubbery number buttons. But the screen on the outside is monochrome-only and doesn't work as a camera viewfinder, which is a little disappointing. A 1.3-megapixel camera is embedded in the top of the phone; on the sides you'll find volume buttons, a TransFlash memory card slot, a button to change audio profiles, and an annoying, nonstandard headphone jack.

I got good reception and enjoyed smooth, well-rounded voice quality on the ZX10's earpiece and speakerphone. The phone isn't tremendously loud, but it's acceptable. In places with weak UMTS signals and strong EDGE signals, it tends to drop to EDGE, but that didn't seem to affect voice calling. I got an excellent 12 hours, 30 minutes of talk time. Unfortunately, there's no Bluetooth or voice dialing, and your headset options will be limited by the odd jack.

Like the LG CU320, the ZX10's major new feature is Cingular Video, the package of video clips included with Cingular's $19.99-a-month Media Net Unlimited package. Major content partners include Cingular-exclusive HBO and the more common CNN, ESPN, NBC, and Cartoon Network. HBO film clips and MusicChoice music video content cost an extra $4.99 a month; you can also buy music videos for 99 cents per video per day. Unlike Sprint and Verizon, Cingular has no downloadable music store.

Cingular's video quality, on the other hand, reigns supreme. Videos are sharper than on either Verizon or Sprint, without any lip-sync problems. And they even look and sound pretty good in EDGE cities that don't yet have Cingular's 3G network. The videos are not quite as smooth and sharp as they are in 3G areas, but they are much smoother than Sprint's jerky MobiTV in non-EV-DO areas. (Verizon's video clips don't work at all in non-EV-DO areas.)

Unfortunately, the ZX10's media player has no full-screen mode, so you're stuck watching your video in a window about two-thirds the size of the screen. The media player's volume is fine indoors, but you'll want headphones in a noisy environment.

There's also a very basic POP3/IMAP e-mail program built in, and an instant-messaging app that supports AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo! Performance on JBenchmark Java benchmark tests was very good, and the ZX10 supports the latest 3D Java extensions, for the best possible gaming experience.

The phone has a swiveling 1.3MP camera and a built-in MP3 player, both of which can access files on the phone's TransFlash card or store material in the roomy 50MB of built-in memory. The MP3 player is very basic, taking MP3 and AAC music files at any bit rate. Photos taken with the ZX10 were sharp, but showed a lot of color noise—they didn't measure up to top-quality phones like the Sony Ericsson S710a. The video mode shot at 176-by-144 and 15 frames per second, typical for current camera phones.

I couldn't hook the ZX10 up to a PC or Mac as a USB modem, because there was no data kit available at the time of review, and cables and drivers for other Samsung phones didn't work. Samsung says a kit should be available soon.

Still, the ZX10 won't take full advantage of Cingular's high-speed HSDPA network, with its 500-700 Kbps speeds in 16 cities (and more coming in April). Instead, both the ZX10 and the LG CU320 are throttled to the slower UMTS system, which runs at 200 to 300 Kbps. That's still a touch faster than Cingular's nationwide EDGE network, but not nearly as fast as the competing EV-DO systems from Sprint and Verizon. If you want true laptop broadband with Cingular, you'll have to get a UMTS PC Card like the Sierra AirCard 860 or the Sierra Wireless AirCard, or wait for the HSDPA phones scheduled for release later this summer.

The ZX10 is a decent performer with a few minor missteps: the odd headphone jack, the monochrome external screen, and the lack of Bluetooth. Those differences lead us to prefer the LG CU320 between the two Cingular UMTS phones. But if you insist on getting your video clips in a flip phone, you'll probably be seduced by the ZX10.

The LG CU320 ($299.99; from $149.99 with contract) is an exceedingly modest introduction to high-speed, third-generation phones for Cingular customers. It's a pleasant, midrange phone with some fun, boredom-banishing video clips. We expected more from Cingular's new network technology, though.

The CU320 is a solid, slightly techy-looking black-and-silver slider phone, with a big 176-by-220 screen on the front and a swiveling 1.3-megapixel camera at the top. Tiny, jewel-like action buttons and a small control pad sit below the screen. The sliding hinge feels secure but smooth. Slide it up to reveal tightly tiled, reasonably sized keys. Buttons on the side control volume, launch the camera, and start a menu with various frequently used functions.

The tri-band CU320 did pretty well in terms of both reception and sound quality. Voices were sharp, maybe just a touch harsh, and transmissions through both the phone and speakerphone sounded clear. The handset is acceptably loud but not thundering. It worked fine with Jabra and Plantronics Bluetooth headsets. And like the Sierra AirCard 860, it tries to hang on to weak 3G signals rather than dropping to EDGE—this didn't affect voice calling, though. The 9 hours, 20 minutes of talk time we got was good, but lower than the Samsung ZX10. I was disappointed to see the phone has no voice-dialing function, but neither does the ZX10. It can use MP3 ringtones you put on a TransFlash card, though they have to be under 600KB in size.

Both the phone's 1.3MP camera and built-in MP3 player can tap into files on the phone's TransFlash card. The MP3 player is very basic, taking MP3s (but not other file formats) at any bit rate; there's no PC-syncing capability other than dragging and dropping onto the memory card, and you can't play your MP3s over Bluetooth. Photos taken with the CU320 were acceptably bright, but blurrier than we would have liked—e-mail, not printing, quality. The video mode took the usual 176-by-144, 15 frames-per-second videos you see on most current camera phones.

There's also a very basic POP3/IMAP e-mail program built in, and an instant-messaging app that handles AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo! Performance on JBenchmark Java benchmark tests was very good, but the CU320 doesn't support the latest 3D Java extensions, making the Samsung ZX10 a better choice for advanced gamers.

Cingular's 3G UMTS/HSDPA network could be a more flexible technology than Sprint and Verizon's EV-DO networks, but the CU320 and ZX10 phones don't take maximum advantage of it. For one thing, they don't run at the full HSDPA speeds of 500 to 700 Kbps in the 16 cities with Cingular's 3G network. Instead, they're throttled to the slower UMTS system, which runs at 200 to 300 Kbps. They also don't have full Web browsers, or a function like video calling that would show off UMTS's ability to simultaneously transmit voice and data. I was thrilled, however, every time I made or received a call while downloading data from the Internet (something you can't do with EV-DO phones.) I downloaded the Opera Mini Web browser, and it felt a little sprightlier on UMTS than on EDGE, but I couldn't measure the improved speed because Opera Mini compresses pages and foils bandwidth testers.

I tested the CU320's 3G functions in Baltimore, but thanks to a provisioning problem, I couldn't get UMTS speeds while the phone was connected to a laptop as a Bluetooth modem. Instead, I puttered along at EDGE speeds of 98 to 186 Kbps.

I had several other connection problems underscoring that the CU320 shouldn't be relied on as a PC modem, at least not without new drivers. I couldn't find a USB cable and drivers that worked properly with the phone, and my Bluetooth dial-up connections would drop unexpectedly on a Dell laptop, an IBM ThinkPad, and a Mac PowerBook G4 12-inch. If you want to use the CU320 as a modem, see if LG or Cingular has a new data kit specifically for this phone. Or, better yet, forget the idea and either get a Sierra AirCard 860 PC Card or wait for the more robust HSDPA phones that will appear later this summer.

The CU320's major competitor isn't high-end Sprint and Verizon 3G phones like the Samsung SPH-A940, but rather the humbly entertaining Motorola V557, a midrange phone with a few antiboredom features. If you just want to talk, take some photos, and amuse yourself with Cingular's video content—not ride high on some 3G revolution—you'll enjoy your time with the CU320.

Nokia 7380

A design triumph, but too odd to be your primary phone.Beautiful. Small and light. High-res camera. The fashion-conscious say neutral colors are in this year. The tech-savvy say 2-megapixel camera phones with Bluetooth are all the rage. Put the two together and you get the Nokia 7380, the sophisticated nightclubber's phone for 2006.

The 7380 is an update to the radical 7280; the two form a unique line of fashion-accessory phones for the U.S. Designed without keypads and a little awkward to use, they're supposed to be second phones that you take out after the workday is over. Think of them as the perfect accessory for a dress by geek-fashion princess Diana Eng.

There's no way to tell that the 7380 is a phone at first glance. It's a keypadless and apparently screenless rectangle; the front is mostly a mirror, with a single glowing, jeweled button surrounded by a subtle rubberized scroll wheel. A bit of etched accenting softens the mirror's face. Flip it over and the back is mostly real leather, interrupted by the camera lens and flash. As on the 7280, a fabric tag juts out of the side, blurring the lines between phone and clothing.

Drop your T-Mobile SIM card into a silver door on the side, hold down a button at one corner of the scroll wheel, and a sharp little 208-by-104 screen lights up in the middle of the mirrored area. (As a 900/1800/1900-MHz worldphone, the 7380 will work well with T-Mobile, but not as well with Cingular, which uses an 850-MHz frequency band in many U.S. cities.)

So how do you dial something without a keypad? You can download your contacts from your PC to the phone using Nokia's free PC Suite software and a Bluetooth connection (as there's no USB port), then spin through your contact list using the scroll wheel. You can pick out numbers painstakingly by scrolling through individual digits. Or you can use Nokia's speaker-independent voice dialing. It's a step above the 7280's trained-voice-tag method, but the phone had trouble understanding some of our commands, and, most annoyingly, there's no way to dial specific digits by voice. Nokia should adopt or learn from the superior VoiceSignal system on phones like the Motorola RAZR V3c.

The phone's speaker is fine, the speakerphone is decent, and the little candy bar is surprisingly comfortable to hold up to your head. But the 7380 shines brightest when used with a Bluetooth headset. We got excellent results with the Plantronics Voyager 510. Reception seemed to be pretty good; but our tests showed nothing remarkable.

Sending and receiving SMS on the 7380 is much like it is on the 7280. To write messages, you scroll through letters of the alphabet with the scroll wheel, which isn't as painful as it sounds because a predictive-text system always shows the most likely letters you'll need next. Still, this isn't a phone for anyone who wants to text more than a few occasional words.

Battery life was poor, which we expected from the meager 700-mAh battery: We got 4 hours, 5 minutes of talk time. But that's fine, given this phone's limited intended use. It will last through your night on the town and help you get a taxi the next morning.

The 7380 has surprising media power for a little fashion phone. It plays MP3s and AACs, even over Bluetooth headsets, though the meager 52MB of built-in memory means it's not a music player—the MP3s are for ringtones. The 2MP camera has a decent flash, for a camera phone, and takes shots quickly. The shots are decently sharp, but we saw red and blue color halos and lots of color noise, putting the 7380 well behind camera phones such as the Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman. The movie mode takes videos at a choppy 176-by-144 and 15 frames per second.

The phone's Bluetooth 2.0 implementation is solid, and we transferred a 4.4MB MP3 file in 65 seconds—that's about 541 Kbps, good for Bluetooth. The phone paired easily with headsets, two PCs, and a Mac. Mac users can connect the 7380 to Apple's Address Book software, use it as a modem, and transfer media files to and from the phone using Bluetooth.

The 7380's Class 6 EDGE modem should get download speeds up to 177.6 Kbps and is usable as a laptop modem, but our account wasn't properly provisioned to test download speeds. The 7380 has a basic WAP browser, calendar, and alarm clock, but no games and no ability to run Java programs.

Ultimately, though, this phone is about looks, and it's striking. It's safe to say that few, if any other people at your cocktail party or dressy event will be toting anything like this piece of tech art—unless they have Nokia's 7280, which you can tell them is so last year.

Nokia N70

If you've seen Nokia's 3G 6680 then you might think the N70 has nothing to offer you. Certainly that handset and this are rather similar in looks and you could, on visuals alone, think the N70 is more of the same.

But you'd be wrong. This is an altogether more advanced handset, with better specifications all round, and in most respects its quality shines.

Orange, O, 3, T-Mobile and Vodafone all have the N70 on their lists, so you've the full range of 3G operators to choose from, and it is available from free from all of them, with some tariffs under £20. If you want the handset on its own, SIM-free, we found it online for around £350.

Design
The N70 is an unassuming handset. No flashes of bright colour, no twisty swivels, no oddly shaped buttons or curvy design. But the 640x480-pixel resolution front camera gives away the N70's 3G pretensions. To get to the main 2-megapixel camera you have to slide a very large plastic cover, which consumes around three quarters of the back of the casing, and is heavily disguised as a design feature.

Slide this cover away from the lens and flash light (there's no self-portrait mirror, sadly) and the camera software starts to run, with the front screen becoming a viewfinder. Slide the cover over the lens, and the camera software turns off. It's slick, but you'll need to be careful when carrying the N70 around, so that the lens cover doesn't get moved by friction in your bag or pocket, or you could end up with a dead battery and hundreds of fuzzy shots of your keys.

This isn't a handset of many buttons. The front has its fair share, of course, and a legacy from the old 6680 is that there are two elongated buttons to the left and right of the number keys that provide access to the main menu and edit functions on the left and back and your 3G operator's services on the right.

We found these fiddly and the same is true of the number keys too because they are all pretty small. The navigation key and its central action button is also diminutive, though the softkeys and call and end buttons that straddle it are larger. We got used to the small keys pretty quickly, but given the amount of space between them and the screen we were miffed, as there is definitely room for larger keys all round.

A design plus is that on the right edge of the casing sits a slot for a memory expansion card. Nokia has chosen to support Reduced Size MultiMediaCards in the N70, and the provided 64MB card can be plugged in and protected by a plastic cover on a rubber hinge.

The only other side-mounted button, apart from a very tiny on-off switch on the upper edge, is a small unlabelled one that is the camera shutter. You can use this if shooting in landscape mode and holding the N70 longways, but the action button beneath the screen does the same job and is more convenient if the phone is being held in its more ordinary tall orientation.

The screen is disappointing. At 176x208 pixels it's not the crispest we've seen. You can apply themes, though -- Nokia provides some on the handset and you can download plenty more.

Many users like the uniformity of the charge connector on Nokia handsets -- it means they can charge their phones anywhere a Nokia handset resides, just by sharing the mains adaptor. The bad news is that the N70 has a much smaller pin-size connector than usual. Realising this will be a huge irritation, Nokia provides a converter cable to the more usual size. But it's down to you to remember to carry it.

Features
The Nokia N70 is a Series 60 handset, and as is usual with this operating system, the built-in calendar and contact book can exchange information with a PC. Both the software and connection cable to achieve this are included.

While there is plenty of software on board for fun, including games and the Movie Director software that lets you turn your own video captures into unique 'muvees', as it calls them, there is a selection of applications that might appeal to professionals too. Among the software hidden away in a folder called Office you'll find a data converter, a calculator, a note manager, a PDF reader and viewers for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

The camera has a zoom of up to 20x. This might sound fantastic, but it's digital, so image quality degrades at every increment as you zoom using the navigation button. To its credit, Nokia acknowledges this and shows the number of pixels you'll be shooting at the zoom level you have currently selected. Oddly, there's a 2x zoom on the front camera too -- during video calls you can zoom into your own nose, which we find a rather scary proposition.

On testing, the camera proved impressive. Indoor shots were a little grainy, but certainly better than those we've had from some phones, and outdoor shots were bright, clear and with good colour definition.

You can play music of course, with volume and forward/back controls on the navigation key. Output from the N70's speaker is woeful, but Nokia's headset adds both texture and depth -- just as well as it uses Nokia's proprietary Pop-Port connector. There are no equaliser settings to play with, which is a pity, and leaves the N70 with an average score in this department.

There's an FM radio built in as well. As is usual, the stereo headset needs to be used with the radio as it includes the FM antenna, though you can play radio through the N70's speaker. There is no auto configuration for the 20 station presets, but pushing the navigation button up or down auto-searches, and saving is a simple matter once you've found stations you like.

The N70 supports visual radio. It is not by any means the only handset to do so, but with the imminent launch of this service in the UK by O2 and Virgin Radio, this feature, which provides information about artists, songs and so on, alongside standard audio, may be a draw.

With all this going on, to make the most of the N70 you are going to need plenty of storage. Unfortunately, there is only 22MB built in. The included Reduced Size MultiMediaCard's 64MB capacity probably won't be enough for your needs. Expect to shell out for a higher-capacity card pretty quickly, but these are relatively inexpensive -- we found 1GB cards online for only £50, and lower-capacity cards are much cheaper.

Performance
Our test handset, loaned to us by 3, delivered a strong signal throughout the test period. Video calls on 3G were very impressive. The entire screen can be set to be occupied by your own or the caller's mugshot, which makes a big difference when compared to the rather more pokey visuals some handsets offer. The other video is, though, a very small thumbnail indeed. It is a very simple matter to switch to using the back-mounted camera for video calls -- you just open that lens cover.

Battery life is always a worry with 3G handsets, but providing you don't go mad with video calls or surfing you should be able to go for a couple of days without charging. MP3 or radio fans might want to make sure they have access to mains power fairly often, though.

Samsung SGH-i310

Remember the days before MP3 players, when mobile phones needed carrying cases and laptops were too heavy to put on your lap? Those were the days, my friends, we thought they'd never end -- but luckily they did.

The good news is that music players and phones are converging into ever smaller and neater packages. Samsung's new SGH-i310's hard-drive-based mobile smart phone is a perfect example.

The SGH-i310 runs on Windows Mobile 5.0, has a 2-megapixel camera and an impressive 8GB hard drive. It's true that Apple's video iPod has a 60GB drive, but you can't snap a photo with your iPod -- or call your mum on it.

The SGH-i310 can be used as an MP3 player or a storage device, and should appeal to music lovers and data monkeys alike -- but at the moment they'll have to live in South Korea. Unfortunately, sources at Samsung in the UK say there is little chance of it making it to our shores any time soon.

If you can't afford to fly to South Korea, and you can't wait for Samsung to release it in the UK, you can always get the SGH-i300, which packs a mere 3GB but is still a phone to be reckoned with. Crave doesn't like being cut out from all this fat phone action, and if Samsung doesn't stump up soon we'll mount a campaign, get a wrist band made up -- or if that doesn't work, we'll just move there.

BenQ-Siemens P51 and E61

Most manufacturers are still setting up their stands at CeBIT 2006, but the eager beavers at BenQ have already shown Crave a set of new mobile phones at the company's impressive football-themed booth. Among the most interesting additions to the range are the P51 'Smart Navigator' and the E61 'Fascinating Music Phone'.

The latter immediately conjures up memories of the Sony-Ericsson W900i Walkman phone, partly because of its generous homage to the colour orange. It lacks the sliding mechanism of the W900i, but its wedge-shaped handset has a set of music control buttons mounted at the top for easy access. It supports MP3, ACC and AAC+ audio formats, and has a six-band graphic equaliser so you can crank up the bass and treble while you nod your head to the latest G-Unit banger.

More interestingly, the E61 can display song lyrics during music playback, so you can impress and annoy fellow commuters with your vocal range or knowledge of contemporary gangsta rap. The phone has 1GB of storage as standard, but if the 240-song capacity proves too miserly, you can add extra tracks via an optional miniSD memory card.

BenQ-Siemens also unveiled the P51 smart phone. As you might expect, this calculator-looking handset runs Windows Mobile 5.0, but also includes an optional integrated GPS receiver and navigation software. Aimed at the BlackBerry set, it features the same SiRF Star III navigation gubbins as most current GPS units, and has a large 72mm (2.8-inch) touchscreen to help reduce your chances of getting lost. Of the gadgets we've seen at CeBIT 2006 thus far, it's at the top of our most-wanted list, as navigating the seemingly endless CeBIT halls is proving something of a challenge.

Sony Ericsson W300i

Crave has always had a hankering to own a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone -- but they're as expensive as a flight to New York if you're not willing to get a monthly contract. Now we're getting interested, though, as the company has announced a cheaper model, the W300i.

The W300i is a bona fide clamshell Walkman mobile phone with FM radio, speakerphone, VGA camera, infrared, Bluetooth, expandable Memory Stick Micro slot, exchangeable covers and it even has quad-band capabilities.

It's got a 25mm (1-inch) monochrome screen on the front to view MP3 track information and a decent sized internal 262,144-colour screen that measures 46mm (1.8 inches) diagonally, and will fit nicely in your pocket.

The W300i claims to have a battery life of a remarkable 9.5 hours' talk time and 400 hours' standby time. If this is true, it means that using it as a phone and an MP3 player won't drain the battery after only one day. And to top it off, it will be available on pay as you go for under £200.

Sony Ericsson has announced that this phone should be in the shops around April, so save up those pennies, and expect a full review here soon.

Siemens SX66

The SX66 was launched in 2005, a fairly bulky high-performance pocket PC Smartphone which was definitely not in the budget category. Cingular Wireless launched the Siemens SX66 with slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.5-inch LCD screen, 400MHz Intel Xscale processor, quad band GSM/GRPS, an SDIO expansion card slot, and built-in Bluetooth and 802.11b WiFi. The SX66 has a talk time of 4 hours and a standby time of 7 days. It was aimed at business use and serious gadget fans and regarded as a must while on the go in Wi-Fi hot spots.

T-Mobile SDA

The T-Mobile SDA is a fun, powerful little phone that's comfortable making calls, playing media, or surfing the Web. Wi-Fi. Dedicated music buttons. Excellent screen. Whether the "S" stands for small, smart, or super-duper, the T-Mobile SDA (on sale February 13) packs in more power per cubic inch than any other phone on the market. Whether syncing with Microsoft Outlook, playing music, or surfing the Web over Wi-Fi, the SDA ($299.99 list) puts an irresistible amount of power into your pocket. That makes this delicious little Microsoft Windows Mobile Smartphone our new Editors' Choice among keyboardless smartphones.

Also known around the world as the iMate SP5m, the SDA Music, and the HTC Tornado, the SDA is the true successor to the beloved Audiovox SMT 5600 smartphone. But everything's been redone here, most impressively the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity.

The SDA is a small, slightly chubby, rounded candy-bar phone with a lot of small buttons. (This is not a phone for folks with big fingers.) The multibutton approach makes learning the SDA a bit of work and leads to occasional incorrect keypresses, but we appreciated every button on the phone, most importantly the dedicated music buttons. Above the buttons stretches a beautiful 320-by-240 VGA screen filled with bold icons and your calendar information.

Starting the phone up takes about 40 seconds, but it's worth the wait for the power within. As a quad-band worldphone, the SDA can make calls anywhere from Toledo to Tashkent. It gets very good reception, though voices were a bit harsher and less precise than we'd have liked, and there's a big background-noise transmission problem in noisy environments. MP3 ringtones sounded good, and the earpiece volume was acceptable if not very loud. The speakerphone was too quiet to use outdoors, though it works acceptably indoors. (That's odd because the media player can really blare, much louder than the speakerphone.) We actually got clearer sound through a Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth headset than we did through the phone's built-in earpiece.

Speaking of Bluetooth, we got Logitech, Jabra, and Plantronics headsets all working with the SDA, and we ActiveSynced with a Dell laptop. The voice dialing is the primitive, recorded-tag type, but using any voice dialing at all over Bluetooth is a step forwards for a Windows Mobile phone. You can also make a phone call, talk on a Bluetooth headset, and surf the Web with Wi-Fi all at the same time. The Bluetooth stack doesn't support playing music over wireless headsets.

Battery life was good, with more than 9.5 hours of talk time and more than 7 hours of PDA usage time. Heavy Wi-Fi use will cut battery life, of course, but the SDA has very smart power management, and it kicks the Wi-Fi into dormant mode when it isn't actively transferring data.

Dell Axim X51v

The first Windows Mobile 5 handheld trades some speed for more features and improved battery life. First Windows Mobile 5.0 handheld. Excellent value for money.

Two steps forward, one step back is still a step forward. Dell's new Axim X51v PDA is physically a very close relative of their existing X50v but runs the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system. The X51v has more memory and includes some more powerful features, but unfortunately its benchmark-test performance lags a bit.

The X51v looks exactly like its predecessor, and most of its hardware is the same, too: a top-of-the-line 624-MHz Intel PXA270 processor, Intel's 2700G 3D graphics accelerator, a VGA screen, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Secure Digital and CompactFlash expansion slots.

Usable Flash memory storage on the X50v was limited to 128MB, but the X51v offers a maximum of 256MB. In addition, the X51v includes a massive software bundle of games and applications: nine games, including full versions of 3D mini-golf and car-rally games, as well as demos of other games. Other interesting bundled applications include a full version of the Battery Pack Lite utility toolbar and demos of Resco's File Explorer utility, SPB Finance, and Westtek's ClearVue document-reading suite.

The X51v has the same excellent gaming performance, sharp screen, and networking capabilities as its predecessor. Its built-in Wi-Fi networking works fine and now supports WPA security, though it's a little awkward to set up. Bluetooth is definitely for syncing, not for audio/video transmission or even file transfer.

Changes in performance stem from both OS and hardware changes. Windows Mobile 5.0 marks a dramatic change in how Pocket PCs address memory. Formerly, Pocket PCs split their RAM between space used to run programs and space used to store files. Flash memory served as a backup for larger or less frequently used files. This makes for a fast, responsive system, but takes its toll in battery life, as RAM needs a continuous trickle of energy to keep its data intact. Pocket PC owners therefore found (and continue to find) that once their battery ran out of juice, all their data and programs stored in RAM evaporated.

The Axim X51v has taken a new tack: It uses RAM exclusively for running programs and stores all programs and data in flash. This has greatly extended the product's battery life and means that data stays intact when the battery goes dead. But flash memory is slower than RAM, so activities that move a lot of data between storage flash and operational RAM— opening files or rebooting the device, for example—become slower on devices running the new OS.

Microsoft Word document rendering takes the biggest hit, because the new Word Mobile processes invisible formatting codes that the old Pocket Word ignored. We saw opening times on large Word documents jump from 3 seconds to 18 seconds or more, though navigating through the documents was very fast once they were open.

Video frame rates for locally stored DivX-formatted files in the Core Media Player were about 7 percent faster on the X50v than on the X51v, but playback of files stored on SD cards was about 3 percent faster on the X51v than on the X50v. Notably, playback of the same file from an SD card was about 9 percent faster than from internal flash memory on the X51v. This shows the impact of the new file system, but it is not nearly as dramatic as with Microsoft Word documents.

The new device struggled on SPB Benchmark's memory and file system tests (see results below). File writes to the default storage directory took three times as long as they did on the X50v, and reads took nearly eight times as long, because on older devices those reads and writes go to RAM, whereas on the X51v they go to flash memory. But SPB's memory copy test produced the same results on the two devices, because this test addresses RAM on both PDAs.

We didn't notice any difference between the two devices in hand-timed trials with ClearVue PDF, Pocket Excel/Excel Mobile, or Pocket Internet Explorer/IE Mobile, or in the 3D games that came with both devices. And the X51v's video frame rates are still well above the 30 frames per second that the human eye can detect.

In exchange for a little patience, you get more power and better battery life. Where the old Pocket PC office applications only supported very basic formatting, the new Pocket Office is pretty good at reproducing more complex formatting in Office documents, such as for tables in Word, bulleted and numbered lists, and embedded images. There's also a PowerPoint viewer, which Microsoft didn't include before. Other minor but welcome improvements include a progress bar in Pocket Internet Explorer and support of Hotmail accounts in the e-mail application.

The X51v achieved more than 4.5 hours of battery life with wireless on—about an hour and a half longer than what we achieved with the X50v, although still well below the life of many other Pocket PCs, such as the 5 hours 46 minutes we got on the massive HP iPAQ hx4700. If we disabled the stepping down of processor speed and played a video in a loop, we got a little less than three hours, about half an hour longer than on the X50v under the same conditions.

The Axim X51v gives up a little speed to give you more data security, more battery life, and a better bundle of applications, all for the same price as the older Axim X50v. Even with hardware similar to that of the X50v, this device remains cutting-edge, with the most powerful processor, best screen, and best gaming performance available. We think that's a good deal, so we'll recommend it as the leading Pocket PC PDA of the moment.

Motorola RAZR V3c

Verizon's best voice phone, with a design to match. See if you can get one with fully working Bluetooth. Gorgeous. Excellent voice quality and reception. Verizon users have been waiting for a RAZR for more than a year now. The nation's most popular phone redefined cool with its sharp, silver lines. The new version improves on some of the original's features while keeping the excellent design, reception, and sound quality.

The V3c also might bring unrestricted Bluetooth to Verizon customers. For years, the carrier has crippled its phones' Bluetooth capabilities, preventing you from transferring your camera-phone pictures to your PC. Both of our test phones allowed Bluetooth file transfers, and we were even able to assign our own Bluetooth-sent MP3s as ringtones. We heard about other V3c users having the same experience, too. This goes strongly against Verizon's past policies, so we asked both the carrier and Motorola about it. Neither got back to us with a definitive answer by press time; our suspicion is that less-restrictive Bluetooth is an unintentional but widely available feature.

At 0.6 inches and 3.5 ounces, the RAZR V3c is a hair thicker and a wee bit heavier than the 3.4-ounce, 0.5-inch-thick original, but the weight difference is unnoticeable, as is the size disparity unless you lay the phones side by side. The models also differ in color, with the V3c a sober gunmetal-gray, where the V3 lets you choose silver, black, blue, or red.

Otherwise, the two phones appear very similar: Both have dull external color screens with 80- by 96-pixel resolution and brighter 176- by 220-pixel color internal displays, flashless cameras on the outside near the top, and big etched-metal keys with rubber inlays. The external screens are fingerprint magnets, though the metal casing of the new model resists smudges well. Silver buttons on the edge of the phones activate the speakerphone, control volume, and trigger voice dialing.

The differences are inside. The V3's GSM radio has been replaced by a Verizon-compatible CDMA one. Reception and sound quality are both excellent. The V3c connected more calls than our baseline LG VX8000 in low-signal areas, and voices, both transmitted and received, were very, very sharp. The speakerphone is loud enough for indoor, car, or limited outdoor use, and voice transmission and reception when using it are also sharp. We were especially pleased by the in-ear feedback you get while talking, which prevents "cell phone yell."

The V3c uses VoiceSignal's excellent speaker-independent voice dialing system, but lacks the VoiceMode speech-to-text function for text messaging, and uses iTap predictive text rather than the more common T9 system. We connected Logitech and Jabra Bluetooth headsets easily and activated voice dialing from our headsets.

In our testing, talk time was just under four hours—acceptable but not great. We'd prefer the 4.5 hours that phones like the Motorola E815 deliver, but the RAZR's slim shape means it has to use a lighter battery that has just 740 mAh, as opposed to the 1,030-mAh capacity of the E815's power cell.

The V3c VGA camera, which now has a 1.3-megapixel sensor, isn't the greatest, but it'll do. Our photos came out darker than those taken with the Motorola E815, and the white-balance software needed a few seconds to remove the blue from our outdoor shots. The camera also takes the usual jaggy 15-second, 176-by-144, 15 frames-per-second video. The 30MB of built-in memory leaves room for about 130 high-res photos, if you don't load any ringtones or games.

The V3c also supports Verizon's V Cast EV-DO broadband service. V Cast videos on the phone are choppy, but then we don't recommend signing on for V Cast's weak range of content anyway. The phone would make a sleek broadband modem for your laptop paired with Verizon's BroadbandConnect service, but as with the Bluetooth features mentioned earlier, we couldn't confirm with Verizon that the capability will be widely available.

The V3c isn't the most feature-packed phone for Verizon. The Motorola E815 and LG VX8100 both have MP3 players and memory card slots, and the Samsung SCH-A970 has a 2MP camera with optical zoom. But the RAZR V3c combines unparalleled design with excellent voice quality and a good enough feature set. That puts it in a tie with the E815 as our Editor's Choice for Verizon phones—and if it turns out the Bluetooth file transfers are for real, we'll bump this rating up even higher.

Nokia 770

The Nokia 770 could be the start of a great thing. Though it's rough around the edges, this could be a terrific little Internet-surfing gadget once Nokia shakes out the bugs.

The 770 is designed to be an extra Internet portal for your home, replacing a costly laptop. It connects to the Internet via 802.11 b/g home networking or using a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, and comes with the Opera Web browser, a simple POP3/IMAP mail reader, music and video players and a PDF reader. It runs a variant of Linux, and third-party developers are already hard at work writing new applications. We downloaded the GAIM instant-messaging program off the Web using the device, and it installed without a hitch.

At 5.5 by 3.1 by 0.7 inches and 8.1 oz, the 770 fits in your hand and slips easily into an included protective sleeve. Lest you feel misled, it's not really for roaming, unless you regularly hang out in Wi-Fi hot spots or are a true Bluetooth road warrior. We found it most useful on the arm of the couch at home, where we could check e-mail or find out who that guy on Lost was via IMDB without getting up or booting a PC.

The 770 looks good in an Ikea-meets-Bang-and-Olufsen way and the interface is simple. A truly breathtaking 800- by 480-pixel screen dominates the unit, and that screen makes the 770 a far better Web-surfing gadget than any PDA: you don't have to reformat pages or scroll horizontally. Really, you have to see this screen to believe it. A 4.1-inch, 800-pixel-wide panel delivers smoother edges and subtler colors than you've ever seen on a handheld.

There's a cursor pad and home button on the left, but no hard keyboard: You enter text by tapping an onscreen keyboard with a stylus or by using handwriting recognition. The handwriting recognizer kept inserting upper-case letters into the middle of words, so we mostly used the on-screen keyboard. The lack of a physical keyboard adds emphasis to the point that this gadget is for consuming data and content, not for writing e-mail. You could attach a Bluetooth keyboard, but then you'd be carrying two pieces.

We connected the 770 to Wi-Fi networks using both WEP and WPA encryption without a problem. Bluetooth connectivity was a little tougher—we had to dig up our wireless carrier's dial-up networking settings. We eventually got it connected to the Internet via Cingular's network, using both the Nokia N90 and Sony Ericsson S710a phones as modems. We totally failed to connect it to Motorola V551 and V557 phones, receiving the message back from the tablet that it could not complete "service discovery."

We found the 770's interface a little bit gummy, but more worrying is that the device can easily max out its 250-MHz TI OMAP 1710 processor and its 64MB of RAM. Opening two browser windows and starting a mail session brought performance to a standstill.

It was nice to see that the 770 accepts RS-MMC memory cards through a slot in the bottom, for storing MP3s and videos. A 64MB card comes with the unit. If you hook the 770 up to a PC or Mac with a USB 2.0 cable, you can see the RS-MMC card as a drive, but not the 770's internal RAM or its 128MB of internal Flash memory.

Battery life with the 770 was very good: we got more than five and a half hours of surfing, reading e-mail, and listening to Internet radio and MP3s. Nokia promises seven days of standby time.

The 770's Internet radio player has some real potential, but at present it's pretty limited. Shoutcast or Real-format radio stations can be streamed through the unit's tinny little speaker or over headphones plugged into its standard, 3.5mm jack. Unfortunately, there's no station directory anywhere on the device, so you're reduced to either wandering the Web in search of radio links or listening to the single preprogrammed built-in top-40 station.

The video player is also promising, but hobbled. It played Real format streams from the BBC's Web site well, but failed to play video downloaded from our PC. Though it supposedly plays 3GP, MPEG-1 and MPEG-4 formats, it's extremely picky about which MPEG files it will play, allowing only files with specific codecs and frame rates.

The RSS viewer looks good and displays news feeds on the device's home page, but entering new feeds is a chore. You can't click on new feeds in the browser and send them to the viewer, nor can you copy and paste links—you need to copy the feed addresses down onto a piece of paper and enter them into the viewer's "new feed" box.

The Opera Web browser handles multiple windows, JavaScript pop-ups, cookies, and Macromedia Flash animations, but more advanced features like the Ajax extensions used in the new Yahoo! Mail interface don't work. Folks with poor eyesight should be aware that Nokia uses tiny text to squeeze a full Web page onto a 4.1-inch screen. You can zoom in on pages to make the text bigger, but then you can no longer fit the entire width of a page onto one screen.

The mail reader hooked up to both POP3 and IMAP4 accounts easily and downloaded mail with attachments, which popped up in the appropriate viewers. The music player handled MP3 and AAC format songs (with Nokia's AAC extension, not Apple's M4A) without trouble. Nokia 6030

The Nokia 6030 offers good looks, sound, and battery life for a bargain price. Good-looking. Razor-sharp voice quality. Terrific battery life. A poor man's Motorola SLVR, the Nokia 6030 ($139.99; with contract, from $19.99) is a slender black phone that has solid reception and good voice quality, all for $20 with a new contract. We think that's a good deal for folks who don't want a lot of fancy features but do want good looks.

The 3.2-ounce 6030, at 4 by 1.7 by 0.7 inches, slips easily into a pocket. Maybe it's not SLVR-thin, but it's also one-tenth the price. The small (128-by-128) color screen is dim and the black buttons are small, although well separated, but we were glad to see a standard 2.5mm headset jack and not Nokia's proprietary Pop-Port connector. Dropping the phone a few times did loosen parts of the case, but they snapped right back into place.

The screen is actually better outdoors than in. It does a good job of absorbing sunlight without reflecting it. Indoors, the display is dim until you turn on the backlight, which isn't that strong, either. But that's par for the course with low-end phones, so we won't hold it against the 6030.

The main reason you'd buy a phone like this is its voice quality—which, we're pleased to report, is terrific. We heard some background hiss, but voices were loud, clear, and sharp, and the surprisingly muscular speakerphone was usable indoors and out. Transmission quality when using the microphone was razor-sharp but sounded a bit muddy through the speakerphone.

MIDI and MP3 ringtones were very loud, though the vibrating motor wasn't all that powerful. Signal reception was near the median among phones we've tested.

Battery life was excellent. We got an amazing 15 hours of talk time under ideal conditions. That's better than you'd get in real life, but it still puts the 6030 among the cellular elite.

You'll even find a few frills: an FM radio that works with a wired headset, a built-in Instant Messaging client that handles AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo!, and the ability to play Java games. The meager 512KB of memory won't hold many games or ringtones, though.

Other than the perks we just mentioned, we're talking low-end here. There's no camera and no way to hook to a PC to sync contacts or use the phone as a modem. Data transfers are slow, anyway, with GPRS speeds at around 30 Kbps. And since the 6030 is a dual-band phone, outside the U.S. and Canada you've got a doorstop in your pocket.

If you want more from your phone, consider trading up to a Nokia 6102, a Sony Ericsson Z520a, or a Motorola V557. All three are world phones with VGA cameras, and the Sony Ericsson and Motorola models have Bluetooth.

The Nokia 6030 brings good reception, voice quality, and looks to an inexpensive Cingular phone. If that's all you need, you'll be happy with this little number.

Verizon XV6700

Verizon's decision to cripple the Wi-Fi and the absence of a modem plan sour this otherwise attractive, powerful Pocket PC phone. Excellent keyboard. Good battery life. Boo. Hiss. Verizon's XV6700 could have been the best PDA/phone on the market today, with a great balance of small size, robust features, and decent call quality. Unfortunately, Verizon's decision to cripple the gadget's Wi-Fi abilities should send power users running to Sprint, which has a better version.

Superficially, the XV6700 looks a lot like Sprint's PPC-6700, but more stylish. The PPC-6700's dull silver cover has been replaced by a matte black with silver trim. Like the PPC-6700, this is a boxy device that, at 5.2 by 2.3 by 0.9 inches and 6.5 ounces, just fits into a medium-size hand. Slide the screen to the right to reveal an excellent keyboard of large, square keys. When you slide the keyboard out, the 2.8-inch, 320-by-240 color screen rotates into landscape mode after a second or two of delay. As on the PPC-6700, this keyboard makes the XV6700 a terrific messaging device, as long as you're willing to grip it with both hands.

The XV6700 performs like the PPC-6700 too. With their 416-MHz Intel processors, both 6700s are faster on SPB Benchmark CPU tests than most other Pocket PC phones, and they can show full-screen video at around 24 frames per second. You can sync over music and video onto a miniSD memory card using Windows Media Player 10, and edit Microsoft Office documents (but not PDFs) using the built-in Pocket Office applications. There's still some gumminess in the user interface and applications, but that's common to all Windows Mobile 5 devices.

As a phone, the XV6700 has average reception. The earpiece was loud enough to be heard inside or outside, though voices sometimes had a compressed, slightly robotic quality. The speakerphone was very quiet, just barely acceptable indoors and too quiet to use outside. We bonded the phone with Logitech, Plantronics, and Jabra Bluetooth headsets without a problem. Unfortunately, Verizon does not include voice-dialing software.

Battery life is good but not great. We got 5 hours 23 minutes of PDA usage time and 5 hours of talk time on a charge. The XV6700's camera is flexible, able to save photos in uncompressed BMP or compressed JPEG formats. Our test images were good overall; a little less noisy, but darker than the PPC-6700's shots. Outdoor photos were fine, with some purple haloing around white areas. We were very disappointed by the 1.3-second shutter delay, though, which will deter spur-of-the-moment snapshots. The video mode records 10-frames-per-second, 320-by-240 videos in 3GPP or MPEG4 formats.

Surfing the Web on Verizon's EV-DO network with Microsoft's Pocket Internet Explorer, we got low but acceptable speeds of 457 to 589 Kbps. That's similar to the speeds we've seen on other Pocket PCs.

For e-mail, the XV6700 comes with Microsoft's Pocket Outlook, which connects to POP3/IMAP and Exchange 2003 servers. Push e-mail for Exchange 2003 SP2 customers will come with a software upgrade later this year. You can also run Verizon's free Wireless Sync push solution, which works with POP3/IMAP accounts and uses a desktop redirector to send your Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes e-mail to the phone.

Verizon had to muck this up, though. One of the 6700's strengths is its combination of Wi-Fi and EV-DO cellular networking. On the Sprint PPC-6700, you can turn on both networks, and if both are available the handheld will pick the faster of the two. In addition, you can make and receive phone calls while surfing with Wi-Fi—a trick that's also possible on the T-Mobile SDA and MDA. But with the Verizon XV6700 you have to turn off the phone to use the Wi-Fi. So, when you're in a hot spot and want to use Wi-Fi, you can't get any phone calls. That's idiotic. We've seen this behavior before, on the Samsung i730, but we were lulled into thinking it was caused by technical limitations. Since the Sprint version of the 6700 works fine with both networks on, we know this must have been a business decision on Verizon's part.

To compound the idiocy, there is no modem plan for this device, an omission that's especially inexcusable because Verizon has just announced new modem plans for several of its other EV-DO phones. You can use Sprint's version of the 6700 as a modem for your laptop; why can't Verizon allow you this option?

We were prepared to love the Verizon XV6700. Although it doesn't work as fluidly in one hand as the Palm Treo 700w, it's a more powerful device with a better keyboard. But we're very disappointed in Verizon's decision to damage one of the XV6700's greatest strengths, its combination of Wi-Fi and EV-DO. As Sprint's EV-DO network has spread nationwide in the past six months, Sprint's PPC-6700, a superior version of this device, might be a reason to switch carriers.

Sprint PM-225 by LG

An excellent little voice phone with a very basic camera tacked on. Small and light. Excellent ergonomics and call quality. The LG PM-225, an ever-so-slight upgrade to the excellent VI-125 voice phone, adds a very basic camera and a color external screen for a little extra money. It should satisfy entry-level camera-phone users who don't want to spend a lot.

The tiny, rounded PM-225 feels great in your hand and shares its small size, as well as very good battery life (4 hours 21 minutes of talk time), with its cheaper sibling. At 3.4 ounces, it's heavier than the 3.1-oz VI-125, but not noticeably so. Sound quality and reception are both very good, and we especially appreciate the prominently marked speakerphone button.

The camera may be one feature the PM-225 has over the VI-125, but it's not very good. This basic VGA camera has only enough built-in memory to hold a mere 20 photos before you have to send them to yourself through Sprint's network, but it's still better than nothing. In our testing, low-light shots were blown-out, blurry, and noisy, and our simulated-daylight still life came out muddy and grayish.

Still, the camera is no worse than we expected at this very low price, and it's no worse than what we saw on camera phones a year or two ago. There's no flash, but there are brightness and white-balance settings, and you can use the external display as a viewfinder for self-portraits when the phone's flip is closed.

Otherwise, the PM-225's features are pretty basic. It can send and receive text and picture messages, surf WAP sites (rather slowly), and play games. It tries valiantly to stream video, but lacks Sprint's new satellite-radio-over-cellular service.

We're rating the PM-225 pretty low because it's at the very low end of the feature-phone market. If you're serious about taking photos with your Sprint phone, pick up a higher-end model, such as the LG MM-535. But if you are looking at voice-only phones and wouldn't mind a camera as a frill, the PM-225 adds that frisson to one of the best voice-only models out there.

Sprint PPC-6700

This is the best Windows Mobile PDA/phone we've seen, with a nearly ideal balance of size and power, though we have a few quibbles. Good EV-DO/Wi-Fi integration. Excellent keyboard. Small size. Good battery life. The best Windows Mobile PDA/phone we've seen so far, the Sprint PPC-6700 combines high-speed networking and an excellent keyboard in a form that will actually fit into your pocket. And it's all packaged attractively, making it a powerful competitor for the Palm Treo 650, though not quite topping the latter product.

At 4.25 by 2.3 by 0.9 inches (HWD) and 6.1 ounces, the PPC-6700 is smaller than almost any other Pocket PC, with the exception of the i-Mate JAM, and it's lighter than the Treo. Surprise! Sliding out the bottom half of the device (on a slightly loose hinge) reveals one of the best portable keyboards we've ever used. This keyboard is simply terrific: The domed keys prevent mistyping and have a satisfying click. When you slide the keyboard out, the screen even rotates into landscape mode after a second or two of delay. The excellent keyboard makes the PPC-6700 even better for text-messaging than the Treo, as long as you don't mind grabbing the gadget with both hands to type.

As a phone, the PPC-6700 is pretty good. The earpiece sound is loud and clear, though transmissions sounded a bit hollow on the other end and didn't offer background-noise cancellation. The speakerphone is so quiet as to be totally useless, but the PPC-6700 bonded and worked well with Logitech and Plantronics Bluetooth headsets. Reception fell safely into the acceptable range. Unfortunately, you have to pay extra for Microsoft's Voice Command voice-dialing software, and that application can't be activated from a Bluetooth headset.

Battery life is good: We got 4 hours, 55 minutes of talk time and almost 6 hours of PDA time using the SPB benchmark-test suite. We got far more PDA time in informal tests: Running a video on a loop for four hours depleted the battery by only 30 percent. We'd consider this device easily capable of heavy use for two days on a single charge.

The 320-by-240 pixel screen is acceptable, if not the brightest we've seen; and the 1.3-megapixel camera has a macro mode switch that takes decent, if highly compressed, shots. We found colors to be pretty true, but our sample images had a bad case of the jaggies, and the 0.7-second shutter delay is longer than we'd prefer. It still beats the cameras on other PDA/phones such as the Treo, JAM, and Samsung i730.

As a data device, the PPC-6700 is simply the best out there. This is the first gadget to combine high-speed EV-DO cellular networking and Wi-Fi adequately (Samsung's i730 has both networks, but you have to turn one off to use the other). It even works as a Bluetooth or USB modem for your laptop. We got speeds up to 1 Mbps on Sprint's EV-DO network in Manhattan, equal to a dedicated PC Card, and connected to WPA and WEP protected Wi-Fi networks.

You're dependent on Sprint's network, though, and Sprint hasn't built out quite as much EV-DO as Verizon has. At press time, Sprint claimed coverage in more than 70 cities, but many of those were relatively small areas, such as an airport or a few neighborhoods. Build-out seems to be going quickly, though: Service in Manhattan kicked in during the week we wrote this review. We'd take a look at Sprint's service map before deciding to purchase this.

If EV-DO and Wi-Fi are both available in an area, the PPC-6700 automatically tries to switch to Wi-Fi. Whether you're on EV-DO or Wi-Fi, Web browsing will feel slower on the PPC-6700 than on a laptop using either type of network connectivity simply because of the sluggishness of Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 applications.

The PPC-6700 is the fourth Windows Mobile 5.0 device we've used, and it has the same advantages and problems as the others—pretty good battery life, but slow application response, given its 416-MHz processor. The Windows Mobile 5.0 sluggishness is most visible when opening large Microsoft Office documents or deleting large blocks of e-mail. On the other hand, once documents are open, the PPC-6700 is bright and frisky: editing Word documents or playing TV shows synced over from a Media Center PC works like a charm (though we wish there was a hold switch). Of the 128MB of memory, only 43.5MB are available for file storage, so you'll probably want to add a mini-SD card.

For push e-mail, Sprint offers its own Business Connect solution and Good Technologies' Goodlink; the PPC-6700 can also work with any POP3/IMAP server or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. We've confirmed that Sprint will support the new Messaging and Security Feature Pack from Microsoft, which will allow true push e-mail from Exchange servers.

The PPC-6700's balance of portability and power kicks every other Pocket PC phone to the curb, but one issue remains—one-handed versus two-handed operation. Owners of Palm Treo and RIM BlackBerry devices can operate them one-handed. While it's possible to check e-mail on the PPC-6700 by twiddling the little joystick, you need to slide the device open or grab a stylus to dial the phone or enter data, which means gripping it with two hands.

Motorola SLVR L7

Looks and feels great, but this is the vanguard of design, not of technology. So pretty. iTunes is easy to use. The Motorola SLVR L7 may be the handsomest phone in America. But even though it runs Apple's popular iTunes music player, its feature set doesn't excite us. (One example: Like the RAZR V3, but unlike the newer V3c, the SLVR L7 uses the primitive recorded-tag form of voice dialing.) Like the Motorola RAZR V3, this is a phone that will best satisfy voice callers who want a see-and-be-seen device.

Everything about the SLVR's design is well done. The anodized-aluminum back, glass-infused plastic case, metal keypad, glass screen, and well-balanced heft of this half-inch-thick status symbol make it feel far more expensive than the $199 Cingular charges (and more expensive than its little brother the SLVR L6). The L7 is hard to keep in your pocket—you want to take it out, touch it, and show it off.

Along with its RAZR cousins, the quad-band SLVR L7 gets excellent reception, though sound quality isn't quite as good. We found that voices, both sent and received, are sharp, and the earpiece volume is loud enough, if not very loud. But the speakerphone is quiet and picks up a lot of background noise.

MP3 ringtones are loud (and you can upload your own with Bluetooth). The vibrating alert felt a bit weak, though. We hooked the phone up to Logitech, Jabra, and Plantronics Bluetooth headsets without problems.

The metal keypad, with raised rubber numbers, has buttons that are bigger than those on the SLVR L6, but still smaller than the RAZR's. They're of acceptable size, though, and the rubber nubs tell you where the numbers are located. Physical buttons on the side of the phone activate the camera and the voice dialing. You get to iTunes by pressing a front-panel key from the home screen.

T-Mobile MDA

Check out this PDA-phone if the Sidekick seems too childish, butwe're cool to its lackluster phone performance. Wi-Fi. Excellent keyboard.A Sidekick for grownups, the T-Mobile MDA ($399 list, available February 20) handles e-mail and Web browsing over Wi-Fi or EDGE with aplomb.

Unfortunately, its lackluster phone performance and the stiff competition from other keyboard smartphones will limit its success.The MDA is a rounded handheld with a slide-out keyboard, much like the Sprint PPC-6700—but smaller, lighter, and with better-separated keys. Dedicated buttons let you hit e-mail, Internet Explorer, your contacts, the camera, and the networking manager with one touch.

E-mail and text-messaging are a breeze with the snappy keyboard, though you can't really use the device one-handed. Turn the phone on with the keyboard closed, and you're running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 on a 320-by-240 touchscreen. Slide the keyboard out, and the screen automatically rotates in response.

In addition to the Windows Mobile 5.0 pocket Office applications, which let you read and edit the most common forms of e-mail attachments, the handheld comes equipped with Clearvue's PDF reader. Microsoft Pocket Outlook supports POP3/IMAP, Exchange, and text-messaging accounts right now, and a free upgrade will add push e-mail from Exchange servers later this year. After adding a few programs, we had 20MB of free storage memory and 23MB of free program memory—plenty for everyday use.

Web surfing, either over Wi-Fi or T-Mobile's nationwide EDGE network, works well with Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer. If you don't like IE, Opera now has an alternative browser for Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PCs.

The 195-MHz processor doesn't have a problem with basic Web tasks or with music synced via Windows Media Player 10. It can even handle full-screen video synced via WMP 10, albeit at reduced rates of 10 to 15 frames per second. On SPB Benchmark test suite, the MDA did surprisingly well on graphics, but scored very poorly on CPU and file system tests; the one processor-heavy application we tried, Skype, failed miserably.

Like so many other PDA/phones, the T-Mobile MDA doesn't look good when compared with the easy-to-use Palm Treo 650 and the powerful Sprint PPC-6700. The Treo is a better phone that gives an unmatched one-handed experience, though it lacks Wi-Fi. The PPC-6700, meanwhile, blends Wi-Fi with high-speed, wide-area EV-DO for an unparalleled one-two punch of Internet power. The MDA isn't a bad PDA/phone, it just isn't the best.

The Sony Ericsson Z520a will brighten your day with its lively design and cool features, and it even plays nicely with Macs.

The Sony Ericsson Z520a is one jazzy little number. It has a lively design, packs some cool features, and works especially well with Macs. Older models do have a bug in the firmware, but as long as you get the latest update, this is a great midrange cell phone.

A small (3.2 by 1.8 by 0.9 inches), light (3.4 ounces) flip phone, the Z520a cuts an impish figure with its removable color covers and loop antenna. A small (80-by-101), dim—but colorful—screen sits on the outside of the flip. Open the phone to find a bigger (128-by-160) color screen and a pad of decent-size domed keys set close together. You'll find a volume rocker and camera button on the left-hand side.

Call reception is very good. And because it's quad-band, the Z520a can make calls almost anywhere in the world. The earpiece is loud, but voices had a somewhat hollow quality, and we occasionally heard background hiss. Calls made through the included wired stereo headset sounded clear, although the non-standard headphone connector was a bit odd.

The speakerphone is fine indoors and just loud enough to hear outdoors; speakerphone transmissions sound good. Unfortunately, the speakerphone shuts off when you close the flip, and voice dialing is the old-school recorded-tag type. Battery life is quite good—we got nearly 15 hours of talk time in our tests. That probably won't hold up in real-life conditions, but in any case, the Z520a has plenty of juice.

We connected the phone to Logitech, Jabra, and Plantronics Bluetooth headsets without a problem, and we were especially thrilled to transfer our own MP3 ringtones over to the phone using Bluetooth—though this feature may be blocked on Cingular-branded phones. (Our review unit came straight from Sony Ericsson.) Ringtones are loud and sound good, but the vibrate-mode motor is barely strong enough to notice in a pocket and wouldn't be noticeable in a bag
